Pediatric OI cortical bone specimen

Micrograph of a pediatric OI cortical bone specimen

Brief Description:

Micrograph of a pediatric OI cortical bone specimen

Essential Description:

Micrograph of a pediatric OI cortical bone specimen (Type I OI). The five dark triangles represent sites where nanoindentation measurements were recently taken.

Detailed Description:

Five dark triangles labeled "C" point to locations in a bone specimen. The slide is labeled with a 100 um scale bar, approximately 1/5 the width of the image. A shallow circular indentation, about 40 microns wide, is surrounded by concentric rings that appear to be grooves and ridges in the surface. The five triangles lie in a regular grid within the outermost deeply marked rings, which appear to be about 300 microns in diameter. The ring formation is surrounded by a pitted surface that displays fainter lamellar grooves.
